ABOUT THE EVENT

Known for the slopes, curves, coves and other geographical accidents, Salvador is readily identified as a city of movement. Popular festivals are part of its calendar, moments when music and dance take center stage. Thus, Cidade da Dança is the legitimate definition for a city that dances all year round.

With that in mind, the National Contemporary Dance Workshop will take place between August 16 and 23, with the aim of moving several public spaces in Salvador. Started in 1980 at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), the project reaches its 16th edition after a 17-year break. Created to promote an artistic language hitherto emerging in Brazil, today the event stands out by bringing contemporary dance to the streets. Completely free, the program will move 11 public spaces, for seven days, with activities ranging from lectures, workshops, shows, performances and fair, among others.

History

We are a family owned and operated business.

Organized by the Dance School of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), the National Contemporary Dance Workshop became the first event to bring together dance professionals in Brazil. Started in 1980, it replaced the National Contemporary Dance Competition (1977), a competitive show that for three years attracted entries from all over the country. Abandoning the competitive character, the Workshop deepened for 15 years the exchange between choreographers, dancers, teachers and scholars, through artistic shows, courses, seminars and debates.

The event was established due to the pioneering spirit and representativeness of the UFBA School of Dance, the first Brazilian higher education school in the area. Created in 1956, for decades it remained the only one to fulfill the function of university professional training. The Postgraduate Program in Dance at the same university also proved to be the first in Brazil and Latin America. By following the precepts of the School, the National Contemporary Dance Workshop became the great propellant of experimental dance created in the country. Among the aesthetics that have toured the stage are contemporary dance, modern dance, dance-theater, African dance, contact-improvisation, modern ballet, ballroom and street dance.
